TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - US President Donald Trump has suggested that Jordan and Egypt take in more Palestinian refugees from Gaza, after a military offensive in Gaza triggered a humanitarian crisis that killed thousands of Gazans.

“It could be,” Trump said when asked whether the transfer of Gazans to Egypt and Jordan would be permanent.

Washington has opposed the forced displacement of Palestinians in the past year. Human rights groups and humanitarian agencies have for months expressed concern about the situation in Gaza, where nearly the entire population has been displaced and is on the brink of starvation.

Washington has been criticized for supporting Israel and helping the country defend itself against groups such as Hamas in Gaza, Hezbollah in Lebanon and the Houthis in Yemen.

“I told him (Jordan’s King Abdullah) that Jordan should take in more Palestinian refugees because I see the whole Gaza Strip is in a complete mess. It’s a mess. I want them to take the people of Gaza,” Trump said in a phone call with King Abdullah on Saturday, January 26, 2025.

In addition to Jordan, Trump also wants Egypt to take in Palestinian refugees. He assured that he would speak to Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi on Sunday, January 26, 2025.

"We're talking about 2.5 million people in Gaza and we're going to take care of the rest," Trump said, referring to the population of Gaza before the Gaza war erupted.

Nearly 69 percent of the buildings in the Gaza Strip have been damaged or destroyed. Homes, schools and even hospitals have been affected by the war. In Beit Lahiya, a widow who asked to be identified as Um Saber, said her house was flattened. She and her family found human bodies in the street, some of which had been there for weeks.

In Rafah, the scene was similar. Mohamed Abu Taha said his city was now like a horror movie. "Houses are flattened. We're finding human remains in the rubble. It's unbelievable," he said.
