TEMPO.CO, JakartaDeputy Speaker of the House of Representatives (DPR) Sufmi Dasco Ahmad said he had discussed the plan to limit the age of social media users with Communications and Digital Minister Meutya Hafid. According to Dasco, the House will discuss the discourse further.

"At that time, we did listen to the idea (of limiting the age of social media), and we had a chat," Dasco said at the parliament complex in Senayan on Tuesday, January 14, 2024.

The Daily Chairman of the National Party Leadership (DPP) Gerindra Party said the DPR would further study the benefits and risks if the regulation were realized. "Of course, the idea from the government will be studied by the legislature. We will discuss it together," Dasco said.

Dasco said that several other countries have implemented minimum age regulations for children to use social media. Australia is currently one such country. Children under 16 are banned from using social media in Australia.

This historic decision came after the Australian Senate passed legislation on Thursday, November 28, 2024, with a majority vote in favor. The law will block users aged 16 and under from accessing popular platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook, Reddit, and X. The government, led by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, stated that the policy aims to protect the mental health and well-being of children and their families.

The government, led by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, stated that this policy aims to protect the mental health and well-being of children and teenagers who are vulnerable to the negative impacts of social media use.

In Indonesia, the age restriction discourse was previously discussed by President Prabowo Subianto and the Minister of Communication and Technology at the Merdeka Palace on Monday, January 13, 2025. Meutya admitted that she discussed the government's strategy to protect children in the digital space, including plans to create a child-friendly digital space policy.

Meutya said the government would first issue a government regulation. Then, Komdigi will study child protection in the digital realm to be included in the law.

He said this government regulation would be a bridge to enter the law. "While bridging once again, we issue regulations while talking to the DPR about what kind of laws we can issue to protect our children," he said.
