Earthquake in South Sea Shakes Southern Part of West Java Tonight

TEMPO.CO, Bandung - An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.6 jolted the southern part of West Java tonight, Tuesday, November 19, 2024, at 07:28 p.m., the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported.

According to the BMKG's map of shaking levels and community reports, the tremors were felt in the Tasikmalaya, Ciamis, Sukabumi, and Garut regions at an intensity level of III on the MMI scale. At this level, the tremors were felt inside houses, as if a truck was passing by.

Weaker tremors were recorded in the Cibeber area of Cianjur at level II on the MMI scale. According to BMKG, there have been no reports of damage to buildings as a result of the earthquake.

Based on BMKG's analysis, the source of the earthquake was located in the sea south of Java, 109 kilometers southwest of Tasikmalaya Regency. The earthquake was classified as shallow at a depth of 15 kilometers.

"Due to the activity of the active undersea fault," said the head of BBMKG Region II Tangerang Hartanto in a written statement after the earthquake.

According to BMKG's monitoring until 07:45 p.m., there was no subsequent earthquake activity. BMKG urged the public to remain calm and not to be influenced by rumors that cannot be verified.
