Tempo.co, Jakarta - PSSI Chair Erick Thohir is seeking ten potential local coaches to support the head coach of the Indonesian national team, Patrick Kluivert. After consulting with Kluivert, PSSI will select two of these candidates to serve as assistant coaches.
The inclusion of two local assistant coaches, Erick explained, is part of the knowledge transfer plan that was agreed upon from the beginning. "This is part of our effort to develop a larger pool of fully trained talent, even though PSSI already has nearly 200 programs dedicated to coaching education," he said, as quoted in a written statement in Jakarta on Tuesday, January 21, 2025.
"The number is almost 5,000 coaches now. The increase is nearly 40 percent, and this includes licenses from D to A and even Pro. We have also invited FIFA and AFC several times," Erick added.
"So, this talent pool must be actively developed. The agreement with Kluivert requires a knowledge transfer, so we are looking for the two best local assistant coaches who can seamlessly integrate with the team," said the man, who also serves as the Minister of State-Owned Enterprises.
After reviewing the 10 candidates, Kluivert and his team will select those who align with the team's philosophy, scope of work, and the necessary skills. Following that, Kluivert will bring in an additional assistant from the Netherlands to synchronize the programs for the U-17, U-20, and U-23 national teams.
According to Erick, this is part of PSSI's effort to enhance the quality of local coaches. The inclusion of Nova Arianto in the U-17 national team and coach Indra Sjafri in the U-20 national team serve as examples of PSSI's initiative to promote local coaching talent.
"Another program we have is in Liga 2, where foreign coaches are not allowed, and all coaches are Indonesian. This allows the best talents in Indonesia to shine. It’s also a crucial part of building a national team from the ground up, and we hope this will naturally be the result of our programs," he explained.
In addition to knowledge transfer at the national team level, Erick Thohir mentioned that they are working to improve coaching career pathways across Indonesia's various regions. "That's why we will also support Liga 3, Liga 4, and eventually, the amateur leagues. Liga 1 and Liga 2 will focus more on industry standards. We also aim to strengthen the regional leagues, particularly Liga 3 and Liga 4, to expand the coaching talent pool as much as possible," Erick explained.
