TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The issue of handling waste on Untung Jawa Island on a daily basis not only involves managing waste from the surrounding community. The person responsible for waste management on Untung Jawa Island, Syaripudin, said that there is often a large amount of incoming trash on the beach.

"There was even up to 10 tons of incoming trash in a day," said Syaripudin when found on Untung Jawa Island, Kepulauan Seribu Regency, Jakarta, on Saturday, February 22, 2025.

According to Syaripudin, the incoming trash comes from the coastal areas of North Jakarta. In addition, some come from the waters of Tangerang due to ocean currents, and possibly from other areas as well.

The incoming trash, according to Syaripudin, usually lands around March to May. However, in 2024 and this year, the arrival of this trash has been irregular.

According to Syaripudin, the types of trash that lands include plastic, residue, wood, and tree branches. "We also have mattresses, bamboo, and even sofas," he said.

The handling of incoming trash is usually sorted on the edge of the beach, but this is done if possible. Then, the trash is taken to the Temporary Processing Site (TPS) on Untung Jawa Island to be temporarily stored before being sent back to North Jakarta.

This trash, according to Syaripudin, will be transported using waste transport ships owned by the Jakarta Environmental Agency, which come every two weeks. After arriving on Jawa Island, the trash will be taken to the Bantargebang Final Disposal Site (TPST) in Bekasi, West Java.

If there is trash that can be recycled, it will not be sent to the Bantargebang Final Disposal Site. "Basically, what is transported are residues, trash that can no longer be recycled," he said.

Syaripudin said that the trash scattered on Untung Jawa Island does not only come from residential homes and incoming trash, but also from tourists visiting the island. Trash also increases at certain times, such as during holiday seasons and weekends.

Based on Tempo's observation, waste management on Untung Jawa Island is very simple. There is not much equipment to sort or process certain types of waste.

Waste transport relies on motorcycles pulling carts behind them. The area of the island is also very limited for waste storage.

In the TPS area, according to Syaripudin, it is mainly used to place residue trash, while organic waste such as food scraps, is processed using maggots.
