TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - State-Owned Enterprises Minister Erick Thohir has addressed President Prabowo Subianto's vision of establishing an Indonesian hajj village in Mecca. He said the idea is still in its early stages and that the government is actively exploring the feasibility of this project.
He made these remarks following a meeting with the Head of the Hajj Organizing Agency (BP Haji) Mochamad Irfan Yusuf and the agency’s Deputy Dahnil Anzar Simanjuntak. President Prabowo established the agency through Presidential Decree Number 144/P/2024 to streamline the management of hajj pilgrimages, previously overseen by the Ministry of Religious Affairs.
“Pak Prabowo has repeatedly expressed his desire for an Indonesian settlement in Mecca, particularly dedicated to providing integrated pilgrimage services. But, we haven't discussed its specific details yet, as this is still an idea under consideration,” Erick explained during a press conference at his office in Central Jakarta on Tuesday, November 19, 2024.
Erick emphasized that it is still too early to discuss the construction of the hajj village or the potential involvement of the state-owned construction company PT PP (Persero) Tbk. He acknowledged that PT PP possesses the necessary expertise and experience to undertake such a project, but stressed that the government is currently focused on exploring various options and conducting relevant discussions.
Meanwhile, Head of the Hajj Organizing Agency Gus Irfan said the technical aspects of the hajj village project would be further elaborated upon in due course.
