TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Chair of PSSI Erick Thohir said that he would evaluate Indonesian National Team comprehensively after facing Saudi Arabia in group C of the third round of the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers in the Asian zone. "Yes, there must be a comprehensive evaluation," said Erick in Jakarta, Monday, November 18, 2024.
According to the Minister of State-Owned Enterprises of the Republic of Indonesia, the evaluation will be conducted for all Indonesian National Team programs that are striving to qualify for the 2026 World Cup. However, he dismissed the notion that the evaluation would discuss the future of coach Shin Tae-yong with the Garuda Squad. "The evaluation is not specific to individuals," he said.
Erick Thohir emphasized that PSSI wants the Indonesian national team to collect at least nine points, which are estimated to be enough to place Rizky Ridho and his colleagues in fourth place in Group C standings.
Currently, Indonesia is still in sixth place or the bottom of the group with three points from five matches. The Indonesian National Team still has five remaining matches consisting of three home matches against Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and China, and two away matches against Australia and Japan.
Erick also urged Indonesian National Team players and coaches not to give up. He believes that the spirit to give their all is necessary to keep the hope alive to advance to the 2026 World Cup.
"Actually, there are several key matches that we lost, one of them being against China (Indonesia lost 1-2). As for the match against Bahrain, I have no comment. But I want the players, coaches to introspect and remain united," he said.
To pave the way towards those nine points, Erick Thohir hopes Indonesia can defeat Saudi Arabia at the Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium (SUGBK), Jakarta, on Tuesday, November 19, 2024. "I want us to win and get the eagerly awaited three points. If successful, it means we have already gathered six points," said Erick.
