TEMPO.CO, Bandung - Landslides occurred in Sukabumi and Cianjur on Tuesday, December 3, 2024, due to torrential downpours, according to the West Java Climatology Station of the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).
According to the Sukabumi Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), prolonged rainfall resulted in severe damage to a house in Loji Village, Simpenan District, Sukabumi Regency, due to a two-meter-high cliff landslide. The incident occurred at 11:00 a.m. local time.
The downpour also caused the Cipalabuan River in Palabuhanratu Village, Palabuhanratu District, Sukabumi Regency to overflow, disrupting the road access to the fishers’ dock at 01:30 p.m.
Meanwhile, in Cianjur, torrential downpours caused a 6-meter cliff to collapse at around 09:00 a.m., causing damages to a house in Talagasari Village, Sindangbarang District.
According to the Head of the BMKG West Java Climatology Station, Rakhmat Prasetia, the rainfall in Sukabumi was recorded reaching 150.6 millimeters per day, while the rainfall in Cianjur reached 112.2 millimeters per day.
Several contributing factors influenced the extreme rainfall in these regions, including sea surface temperature anomalies in some Indonesian waters, which were relatively warm, supporting evaporation and the addition of water vapor mass around the West Java region. The air humidity levels in the West Java region ranged from 70 to 98 percent.
BMKG also observed cyclone 95W seeds in the North Natuna Sea, and cyclonic circulations were seen in the southwest Indian Ocean off Banten. These conditions resulted in the formation of wind shear patterns and wind convergence around the West Java region.
Based on radar image interpretation, convective clouds were observed in the southern waters of West Java, protruding into Sukabumi Regency and Garut Regency since early morning, with cloud peak temperatures reaching -69 to -75 degrees Celsius.
BMKG said the convective clouds gradually dissipated starting at early morning until midday in parts of Sukabumi and Cianjur.
