TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Facebook [archive] and X accounts posted screenshots of remarks made by U.S. President Donald Trump about Indonesia and Iran on April 9, 2026. The English-language post stated that the majority of Sunni Indonesians have rejected Shias for years. However, they are now being accused of supporting the Shia regime in Iran because of their shared enemies: Israel and the U.S.
Is it true that Donald Trump mentioned Shias and Sunnis in Indonesia regarding Iran?
FACT CHECK
Tempo verified the content through reverse image searches and credible media reports. The results showed no evidence that Donald Trump had mentioned Sunni and Shia Muslims in Indonesia regarding support for Iran.
Tempo first tracked Donald Trump's Truth Social account. Trump founded the social media platform in 2022. Trump frequently uses the platform to make public statements. On April 9, 2026, Tempo examined all of Trump's posts when the content was circulating on Facebook and Twitter. During that period, Trump made nine posts discussing the U.S. Congress, negotiations with Iran, and criticizing the New York Times and CNN for their war reporting. None of the posts mentioned the Sunni-Shia issue in Indonesia or expressed support for Iran. Tempo's search around April 9 also yielded no results.
Tempo also searched rollcall.com and trumpstruth.org, two websites that document Trump's activities on Truth Social. Rollcall.com's search results showed that Trump had not issued any statements containing the keyword "Indonesia" in the past month.
Similarly, there have been no Trump tweets about Indonesia on the trumpstruth.org platform since the U.S. and Israel attacked Iran on February 28, 2026.
CONCLUSION
Tempo's investigation found that Donald Trump's claim about Shias and Sunnis in Indonesia regarding Iran is false.
