TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Several areas across Jakarta were hit by a sudden power outage on Thursday night, April 9, 2026. The electricity disruption struck various sectors, including Central, North, and West Jakarta.
The unannounced blackout temporarily paralyzed parts of Jakarta's MRT operations and left residents bewildered. Many netizens took to social media to voice their frustrations over the sudden loss of power.
Here are the key facts regarding the Jakarta blackout last night:
Social Media Outcry
The unexpected blackout in several Jakarta districts disrupted residents' evening activities as street lights went dark. Major public spaces, including Grand Indonesia Mall, were also affected.
On social media, some netizens reported being trapped in elevators during the outage. "People are trapped in the elevator due to a power disruption in Jakarta," wrote the TikTok account @ijoe**. In the shared footage, firefighters and security personnel were seen manually prying open elevator doors to evacuate residents.
Furthermore, some observers questioned whether the failure was linked to cost-cutting measures. "Seeing Jakarta in a blackout is scary. It’s not just ordinary places; big malls like GI are affected. Even Sudirman, the economic heart of Jakarta, is dark. Not to mention the public transportation chaos. Why is this happening? Is it for efficiency?" posted X account @Captain Haddo** on Thursday night.
Root Causes of the Outage
State-owned electricity firm PLN's main distribution unit (UID) in Jakarta confirmed the power disruption. Haris Andika, the company's Senior Manager of Communication and Public Relations, noted that the blackout was triggered by electrical supply issues originating from several substations.
"There was a disruption in the electricity supply in several areas of Jakarta originating from several substations tonight," Haris said in a written statement on Thursday, April 9, 2026.
As of 8:00 p.m. Western Indonesia Time, the outage persisted in the Angke sub-district of North Jakarta and surrounding neighborhoods. Haris noted that PLN was gradually normalizing the grid and would continue to provide updates to the public.
MRT Jakarta Plunged into Darkness
The power disruption also took a toll on public transportation. City-owned mass transit operator PT MRT Jakarta reported operational disruptions at several stations beginning at 5:57 p.m. due to supply issues from PLN.
Facilities such as lighting, elevators, and escalators momentarily ceased to function, and all elevated stations experienced a total blackout. However, MRT management stated that the situation gradually returned to normal following swift intervention.
"All elevated stations experienced a blackout, but the situation has now been successfully normalized," said the Head of the Corporate Secretary Division at PT MRT Jakarta in a written statement on Thursday night.
