TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, that five Indonesian citizens who were reportedly members of the crew on a capsized fishing boat in Japanese waters on Monday were safe.

According to the ministry's Citizen Protection Director, Judha Nugraha, the Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo immediately contacted local authorities, including the Japanese coast guard service, to monitor the progress of search operations and the condition of Indonesian citizens on the ill-fated boat.

“The Japan Coast Guard informed us that the five Indonesian citizens are safe,” Judha said in a written statement received on Tuesday, as reported by Antara.

Judha also confirmed that the two crew members reported dead and three others who are still missing are all local residents.

Citing the Japan Times, the fishing boat Ohama Maru No. 8 capsized 31 kilometers east off the coast of Kashima Port, Ibaraki Prefecture, central Japan, leaving two people dead and three others missing.

The boat, belonging to a fisheries cooperative in the Kitaibaraki area of Ibaraki Prefecture, was carrying 20 people, consisting of 15 Japanese nationals and five Indonesian citizens, when it capsized on Monday at 2:08 a.m. local time.

Local authorities confirmed that 15 crew members, including the five Indonesian citizens, were successfully evacuated and survived, while two other crew members identified as Japanese men in their 50s and 60s were confirmed dead.

One of the crew members who had been rescued reportedly said the vessel tilted gradually after a large amount of fish was caught in a net.

Meanwhile, Japanese Ambassador to Indonesia Masaki Yasushi expressed his condolences over the incident.

“We pray for the search operations to be successful and for the other crew members to swiftly recover,” Ambassador Masaki wrote on Instagram @jpnambsindonesia on Monday.
