TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Floods inundated West Sumatra's Koto XI Tarusan District, in Pesisir Selatan Regency, following heavy rains from Monday afternoon to Tuesday morning, January 6-7, 2025. A total of 889 houses or 1,089 families were affected.

"Data collection is still ongoing in several villages such as Barung-Barung Balantai, Duku, and Duku Utara," said West Sumatra Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) spokesman Ilham Wahab on Tuesday afternoon.

He said the flood had paralyzed the trans-Sumatra route between West Sumatra and Bengkulu. "Joint officers from BPBD, military or TNI, and National Police continue to remove materials like rocks, sand, and tree trunks that were carried by the current and disrupted some roads," he said.

In addition, affected residents have begun working with officials to clean their homes from flood debris. The BPBD is also registering losses, including damage to agricultural areas that have the potential to cause crop failure.

High-intensity rains were also reported in Agam and Tanah Datar regency. BPBD and BMKG (Meteorology Agency) have appealed to the public, especially those living near rivers originating from Mount Marapi, to increase their vigilance.

"We are concerned that high rainfall could increase the discharge of river water and trigger cold lava floods like the one that occurred in May 2024," Ilham said, referring to the incident that killed 67 people.

He added, "Management and anticipation efforts will continue so that the risk of damage and casualties can be minimized."
