TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono affirmed that the formation and existence of the Board of Peace does not aim to replace the role of the United Nations in maintaining peace in Gaza. According to him, the Board of Peace is an international organization formed in response to several countries' concerns about efforts to create peace and stability, particularly in Gaza, amid ongoing conflict.
"Will this replace the UN? Of course not," said Sugiono in a statement in Bad Ragaz, Switzerland, Friday local time, as quoted from Antara. He stated that the board is not intended to take over or replace the UN mandate, but is present as part of an international initiative that arises from the collective concern for the humanitarian and security conditions in the region.
"This board is not intended to replace the UN. It is an international council, born from the concern to create peace and stability, especially in Gaza," he said.
In this context, recognizing the importance of promoting peace, the Indonesian government has decided to join the Board of Peace. Although this council formed relatively quickly, President Prabowo Subianto decided to make Indonesia part of the Board of Peace after considering various strategic aspects.
"From the beginning, Indonesia has been a country that cares about peace, international stability, and especially the situation in Palestine. Because this Board of Peace is part of the effort to achieve peace, we must be a part of it," he said.
The decision was also made through intensive consultations with the countries involved in the Group of New York. Besides Indonesia, several countries agreed to join, including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Jordan, Turkey, Pakistan, Egypt, and Indonesia. "Two days before the signing, everyone agreed to join the Board of Peace," he said.
He mentioned that Indonesia could leverage its position on the Gaza Peace Board to advocate for Palestinian independence.
The Board of Peace is an international body initiated by the President of the United States, Donald Trump, to oversee the administration, stabilization, and reconstruction of Gaza in the post-conflict transition. Prabowo Subianto was one of the presidents who signed the Board of Peace Charter as part of the World Economic Forum 2026 in Davos, Switzerland, on Thursday, January 22, 2026.
