TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - People on Earth will welcome another lunar event soon, in mid-November. This will be the full moon of November, which is popularly known as the Beaver Moon.
The celestial phenomenon is more than just a regular full moon but also marks the last of four consecutive supermoons in 2024, following October’s Hunter’s Moon. So, when is the date of November’s full moon this year?
For all astrophiles out there, here’s all the information you need to know about the upcoming Beaver’s Moon this November, as cited from NASA and space.com.
When is the Full Moon in November 2024?
After the Hunter’s Moon on October 17, another full moon is set to rise this Friday, November 15, 2024. NASA informs that the so-called Beaver Moon will reach its peak illumination at 4:29 PM EST. This will be around dawn time on Saturday if you observe the event from Jakarta.
Stargazers who miss the full moon this Friday need not worry. The Beaver Moon will remain full for three days, from a few hours before sunrise on Thursday morning to a few hours before sunrise on Sunday morning, as quoted from NASA.
Furthermore, according to space.com, the full moon this November will be the last of four supermoons in a row throughout the year. Next month’s full moon will be a cold moon.
Since November’s full moon is a supermoon, you will notice that our natural satellite will appear slightly bigger. NASA also adds that the Beaver Moon will illuminate a bit brighter than mid-August’s supermoon, the Sturgeon Moon.
Why is It Called the Beaver Moon?
The full moon in November is traditionally called the Beaver Moon. According to the Maine Farmer’s Almanac, as mentioned in NASA, the period when November’s full moon occurs marks the time to hunt beavers in order to ensure an adequate supply of warm furs during winter.
Others believe that the term Beaver Moon may have originated from the increased activities of beavers in mid-November as a preparation for the snowy season.
In other cultures, November’s full moon is known as the Frost/Frosty Moon or the Snow Moon. This is because the occurrence of the full moon coincides with the beginning of frosts and snowfall, particularly in the northeastern region of North America.
Other Astronomical Events to Watch in November
While the Beaver Moon is the highlight of November’s lunar events, it’s not the only celestial show this month. Earlier this November, the New Moon rose on November 1, and there was a Taurids meteor shower last November 4, producing around five to ten meteors per hour.
Other astronomical events you will expect this November, according to seasky.org, are the following:
- November 16 will be the best time to observe the Mercury. It is because the closest planet in our Solar System will soon reach its greatest eastern elongation of 22.5 degrees from the Sun.
- On November 17, Uranus will be at its closest distance to Earth, making it appear brighter than usual.
- A meteor shower is set to occur from November 17 to 18. This will be the Leonids, which is expected to produce up to 15 meteors per hour at its peak.
To experience the best view of the Beaver Moon in November, mark your calendar for the night of November 15, 2024. You don’t want to miss this month’s full moon since it will be the last supermoon of 2024.
