Gaza Famine Claims 7 More Lives, Bringing Total Deaths to 169

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Seven Palestinians, including a child, died from starvation and malnutrition in the Gaza Strip on Saturday, August 2, 2025, according to the Gaza's Ministry of Health in the besieged enclave.

The latest fatalities, recorded within 24 hours, bring the total number of starvation-related deaths since October 2023 to 169, including 93 children, the ministry said in a statement cited by Anadolu.

The Ministry warned that the humanitarian crisis in Gaza continues to worsen due to the ongoing Israeli blockade, which has lasted 18 years and severely restricted access to food and medical supplies

"The situation is deteriorating rapidly," the ministry emphasized, renewing its appeal to the international community and humanitarian organizations to take immediate action to halt the suffering and deliver urgent aid.

Since March 2, Israeli authorities have closed all border crossings, further exacerbating the starvation crisis in the enclave. The famine affecting more than two million Palestinians in Gaza has reached a critical level and is accelerating deaths, according to aid workers and medical staff cited by Aljazeera.

While Palestinian children remain the most vulnerable, adults have also become victims of the Israeli blockade.

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) reported that nearly 100,000 women and children urgently require treatment for malnutrition, with nearly a third of Gaza’s population "have been without food for days." Medical teams have also run out of essential treatments and medications.

The World Health Organization (WHO) noted a significant rise in malnutrition and illness, with widespread starvation across the population.

Doctors Without Borders (MSF) observed that one in four children and pregnant or breastfeeding women examined at its clinics in Gaza last week suffered from malnutrition, attributing the crisis to what they described as the "deliberate use of starvation as a weapon" by Israel.

Despite mounting international pressure, Israel has continued its offensive in Gaza, which began on October 7, 2023. The attacks have killed over 60,000 Palestinians, most of them women and children, and have devastated the enclave, creating widespread famine conditions.

In November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.

Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice over its actions in the war.
