TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - On the past Thursday, Android Headlines reported that Google had canceled the development of Pixel Tablet 3 -- even before announcing its 2nd generation model. A day later, Android Authority confirmed that the Pixel Tablet 2nd generation had been boxed.
Meaning, the Pixel Tablet released last year is likely the only one ever produced, and Google had abandoned the tablet category for the second time within five years.
According to The Verge, reports suggested that Pixel Tablet sales were so poor that Google decided it was not worthwhile to continue its investment. Despite rumors circulating just a week prior about new features and a keyboard accessory for the continuation of Pixel Tablet development that is now reportedly being dropped.
It is reasonable to note the possibility that Google's Nest Division will take over the ambition of large-screen products. They will then focus on evolving devices such as Nest Hub and Hub Max rather than tablets.
Google had previously struggled to enter the global tablet market and produce a competent competitor to its rival, Apple, which has the iPad. Google initially had a promising start with the Nexus 7, but never really increased its competitiveness since then.
Android also significantly lags behind iPadOS in terms of the number of third-party applications optimized for tablets. This further adds to the issues hindering Pixel Tablet progress.
Google had actually thrown in the towel for tablet products in 2019 after its Pixel Slate received negative reviews. At that time, two tablet models that were still in development were decided to be canceled for shipment.
However, in 2022, Google had a change of heart and announced that the Pixel hardware team was working on a tablet. The device eventually became the Pixel Tablet sold at $499. The tablet was distributed with a speaker dock that could magnetically attach to the tablet.
There has been no response or clarification from Google regarding the continuation of tablet production.
