TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - West Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi has issued an apology to residents whose neighborhoods remain inundated by floods. He explained that the flooding continues to impact low-lying residential areas situated below river levels.
"Secondly, there have been many changes, with former paddy fields, swamps, and lakes transformed into residential areas, causing floods," Dedi said in a statement posted on his Instagram account @dedimulyadi71 on Tuesday, July 8, 2025.
The Gerindra Party politician also pointed out that flooding still occurs in regions where river normalization efforts have not been undertaken. He claimed that areas where such projects have been completed are no longer affected.
"Based on the analysis I have conducted, it turns out that areas where the river has been normalized do not experience floods. And areas where normalization has not been carried out still experience floods," he explained.
Dedi called on the regents of Bogor, Bekasi, Karawang, and the mayor of Bekasi to continue river normalization projects. He also urged them to rehabilitate degraded land and prevent the conversion of land functions.
"Make extra efforts to restore the function of the river, swamp, lake, and paddy fields," he said.
He acknowledged that local government efforts have not been entirely successful but emphasized that some progress has been made in reducing flood impacts in vulnerable areas.
Heavy rainfall has triggered flooding in multiple parts of West Java. On Monday night, July 7, 2025, eastern Bogor Regency was hit, leading to the evacuation of 16 patients from Permata Jonggol Hospital and displacing 1,312 residents.
In Bekasi City, floods struck several areas on Tuesday, July 8, following the overflow of the Bekasi River. One of the affected locations is Jalan RA Kartini, Gang Mawar 6, Margahayu Village, East Bekasi Sub-district.
Boy Priadi, head of RT 08 RW 03 Margahayu, reported that around 70 homes were flooded, affecting about 150 families. He said water began entering the area late Monday night at approximately 11:30 PM.
