TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Deputy Minister of Home Affairs Bima Arya revealed that 28 ad hoc election officials passed away as of December 8, 2024. He disclosed this information during a working meeting with Commission I of the Regional Representatives Council (DPD) in Senayan, Central Jakarta, on Tuesday, December 10, 2024.
“We observed that in 2024, 28 ad hoc officials have passed away as of December 8. Most of them were due to fatigue and heart attacks,” said Bima.
He noted that the number of ad hoc General Election Commission (KPU) officials who passed away during the 2024 simultaneous Regional Head Elections was lower compared to the 2020 Regional Head Elections. According to the data presented by Bima, 41 ad hoc KPU officials lost their lives during the 2020 Regional Head Elections.
“When we compare the data, the number [of fatalities] is not as high as in the 2019 general elections, or the previous presidential and legislative elections,” he added.
During the 2024 General Election, 181 ad hoc KPU officials and 48 ad hoc Election Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu) officials tragically lost their lives. In contrast, the 2019 General Election witnessed a significantly higher number of fatalities, with 722 ad hoc KPU officials and 72 ad hoc Bawaslu officials succumbing to their duties.
“Nevertheless, these incidents serve as a reminder for us to prioritize measures to minimize or reduce the number of officials who passed away due to fatigue. This is our note to improve the systems, both technically and administratively,” Bima emphasized.
Compensation for deceased officials is regulated by the Finance Minister’s Circular Letter S-647/MK.02/2022, outlined in the Other Input Costs Unit Election Stages and Election Guidelines, and Decision Number 59 of 2023 concerning Technical Guidelines for Providing Compensation for Ad Hoc Bodies. The work accident compensation for deceased officials amounts to Rp36 million per person, supplemented by burial assistance of Rp10 million per person.
