
Extreme heat is sweeping across most of Japan. The Japan Meteorological Agency announced a spike in temperatures on Sunday, July 6, 2025, according to NHK Japan. The government has urged the public to protect themselves when engaging in outdoor activities to prevent the risk of heatstroke.
The city of Kuwana in Mie Prefecture recorded the highest temperature at 38.3 degrees Celsius. Fuchu city in Tokyo reached 36.5 degrees Celsius. In Shari City, Hokkaido, the temperature reached 35.4 degrees Celsius. For the first time this season, the northernmost prefecture of Japan hit 35 degrees Celsius.
What is Heatstroke?
Heatstroke occurs when the body temperature rises very high, caused by being in a very hot environment. Heatstroke is a condition experienced by the body if it is too hot and unable to effectively cool itself.
Heatstroke is a medical emergency. Symptoms of heatstroke occur when the body's core temperature rises above 40 degrees Celsius. This condition can cause dizziness, red skin, nausea, weakness, rapid breathing, and heart rate. Individuals with this condition usually have difficulty focusing during activities, according to WebMD.
Individuals with symptoms of heatstroke require medical assistance. The first aid that can be provided is to move the affected person to a cool place.
Heatstroke is a condition experienced by the body when it is too hot and unable to effectively cool itself. This condition makes the body unable to control its body temperature and struggles to produce sweat.
Other factors that make individuals vulnerable to heatstroke include wearing thick clothing in hot weather, preventing sweat evaporation. Therefore, one of the first measures to prevent the risk of heatstroke is by removing some clothing.
Tips to Prevent Heatstroke
- Wearing loose and light clothing.
- Protecting oneself from sunburn, as it affects the body's ability to cool down. Wear a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen with at least SPF 15 every 2 hours when outdoors.
- Drink before feeling very thirsty.
- Take breaks in shady areas when engaging in outdoor activities
