TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has nominated U.S. President Donald Trump as a candidate for the Nobel Peace Prize. Netanyahu believes that Trump is currently working to establish peace in various regions.
Anyone alive and active in organizations or institutions is eligible for the Nobel Peace Prize. The Nobel Foundation's statutes determine the valid nomination provisions. In order for a nomination to be considered valid, it must be submitted by January 31 at the latest. Nominations should preferably be made through an online form.
Based on information from its official website, nobelpeaceprize.org, the Nobel Peace Prize is awarded to those who have done the most or the best work for international fraternity, the reduction or abolition of standing armies, and the promotion of peace congresses and peace concepts. Over time, the Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded as recognition of various types of peace work and peace concepts.
The process of nominating the Nobel Peace Prize is quite lengthy. The screening and decision-making process takes eight months, involving not only the Norwegian Nobel Committee comprising five secretary members, but also a group of Norwegian and international advisers. Advisers are chosen based on their professional experience and academic expertise. They prepare individual reports on candidates included in the committee's shortlist. The initial reports are usually ready by the end of April.
The committee members then study these reports along with other relevant information and begin their deliberations. Often, they will request further reports on various candidates. Throughout the summer, as they continue their deliberations and receive additional reports from advisers, they narrow down the candidates to a very small group.
By early October at the latest, the committee will decide by a simple majority vote. This decision is final and not subject to appeal. The names of the Nobel Peace Prize winners will be announced. This cycle culminates on December 10, when the annual Nobel Peace Prize Award Ceremony takes place at Oslo City Hall. During the ceremony, the winners deliver their Nobel lectures and receive the Nobel Medals, Diplomas, and documents confirming the amount of the prize.
The Nobel Peace Prize Nomination Process
- Submission period: Nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize are accepted until January 31.
- Restricted nomination period: Nominations for next year's candidates can be registered online from mid-October.
- Committee receipt: Nominations submitted before the deadline of January 31 are submitted to the Nobel Committee in mid-February.
- Shortlisting: The Nobel Committee reviews all valid nominations and prepares a shortlist for further examination.
- External analysis: Reports on candidates are submitted by the Committee's permanent advisers and other Norwegian or international experts.
- Consideration: The Committee meets regularly from mid-February to September to discuss and gradually narrow down the field of candidates.
- Committee decision: The Norwegian Nobel Committee decides who will be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
- Announcement: The Nobel Peace Prize winner is announced on the first Friday of October.
