TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Ministry of Communication and Digital (Kemkomdigi) has confirmed that the Indonesian Game Rating System (IGRS) ratings displayed for a number of games on the Steam platform do not represent official classifications verified by the Indonesian government.
Sonny Hendra Sudaryana, Director of Digital Ecosystem Development at Kemkomdigi, stated that monitoring results indicate that the ratings displayed on the platform are still derived from an internal, self-declaration mechanism and have not undergone the official verification process in accordance with Indonesian regulations.
"The ratings in circulation are not the official IGRS classification results. This has the potential to cause public misunderstanding, particularly regarding the age-appropriateness of a game," Sonny said in a statement confirmed in Jakarta on Sunday.
Kemkomdigi emphasized that every digital business actor has an obligation to provide accurate, clear, and non-misleading information, while ensuring user protection.
These obligations are stipulated in various regulations, including Law Number 1 of 2024 (Revised ITE Law), Ministerial Regulation of the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology Number 2 of 2024 concerning Game Classification, and Ministerial Regulation of the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology Number 5 of 2020 concerning Private Electronic System Providers.
Based on these provisions, the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology assesses that there are indications of inconsistencies between the information displayed and Indonesian regulations, such as the display of unofficial ratings and the use of the IGRS label without a verification process.
The Ministry of Communication and Information Technology will seek clarification from Steam and conduct further discussions to ensure compliance with national regulations.
"We ask the platform to ensure that all information displayed to the public is accurate and accountable. This is not only a matter of compliance, but also a responsibility to protect users, especially children," said Sonny.
If violations are found during the evaluation process, the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology will follow up in accordance with statutory provisions, including administrative action against non-compliant electronic system providers.
In addition, the Ministry of Communication and Digital Economy (Kemkomdigi) continues to improve the IGRS system, including strengthening verification and oversight mechanisms to ensure the classification system operates more accurately and reliably.
The public is encouraged to refer to official information on the IGRS website and the Ministry's official channels. The public can submit feedback and report any discrepancies in information through the IGRS helpdesk at [email protected] or the official channel at komdigi.go.id.
