TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's new capital city airport, or IKN airport, is officially registered internationally with an International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) code, WALK. However, the airport, now called Nusantara International Airport, has not yet become an airport for commercial flights.
Aviation observer Alvin Lie explained that in order to serve commercial flights, every airport must first be registered with the International Air Transport Association (IATA) code. Meanwhile, based on information from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation of the Ministry of Transportation, the IATA code for Nusantara International Airport is still empty.
"If it's commercial and registered with IATA, it will get a three-letter code later. Like Soekarno Hatta with the code CGK," Alvin told Tempo on Tuesday, November 12, 2024. "IKN airport has not yet been registered for this three-letter code."
Moreover, according to Alvin, Nusantara Airport does not need to be designated as a commercial airport. Furthermore, in its development, which is regulated by Presidential Regulation No. 31 of 2023, Nusantara Airport is intended to be a VVIP airport, a special airport to support the capital of the archipelago. This means that until the Presidential Regulation is amended, the status of the airport located in Penajam Paser Utara Regency, East Kalimantan, will remain a special airport.
"For commercial purposes, there is already the Sepinggan Airport in Balikpapan," Alvin said. There is also the APT Pranoto Samarinda Airport. "There are two pretty big airports," he added.
The official website of the Ministry of Transportation stated that Nusantara International Airport is operated for public use. However, despite its international registration, Nusantara International Airport is designated for domestic flights. The airport is under the authority of Balikpapan Airport Area VII and is located at coordinates 01 09' 31" S 116 42' 29" E. This airport can accommodate Boeing 737-800 aircraft.
Construction Progress Reaches 70 Percent
The Ministry of Public Works announced that the construction progress of the IKN airport runway has reached 70 percent. Director General of Highways Rachman Arief Dienaputra aims to complete the 3,300-meter runway project by February 2025.
Although the construction is not yet completed, aviation observer Alvin Lie said that the registration of the airport in the international ICAO code is mandatory. In addition, Nusantara International Airport has been used to land the presidential aircraft type RJ85 on Tuesday, September 24, 2024. The aircraft carried the 7th President of the Republic of Indonesia, Jokowi, on a working visit to several regions in Kalimantan. At the time, the runway was only 2,200 meters long.
"This registration is also a concern for other aircraft flying over the airport to know the Nusantara Airport area," said Alvin.
