TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries targets Indonesia as one of the world's top 10 largest exporters of fishery products.
"For export targets, this is, of course, a five-year target, in 2024 to 2029 Indonesia can be among the top ten," said the head of the Ministry's Agency for Control and Monitoring Quality of Marine and Fishery Products Ishartini during a press conference at her office in Central Jakarta on Thursday, October 24, 2024.
Based on the data she presented, Indonesia is ranked 13th with a market share of 3.03 percent and a value of US$5.63 billion, or equivalent to Rp 87.78 trillion. The top five countries include China, Norway, Ecuador, Chile, and Vietnam.
"China, Norway with its salmon, Ecuador with its shrimp, (then) Chile, Vietnam. Indonesia is ranked 13th," Ishartini said
According to Ishartini, the achievements of the top 5 exporting countries are important as a reference and the main focus of the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries in designing future targets. "This is certainly our main focus in our design so that we can increase Indonesia's ranking to enter the top ten exporting countries in the world," she said.
She explained that the government needs to set several fishery commodities as the main focus. Based on records in 2023, the three main export commodities of Indonesian fishery products are shrimp with a value of US$1.73 billion, tuna-mackerel-skipjack with a value of US$927.13 million, and squid-octopus-cuttlefish with a value of US$762.58 million.
On the other hand, trout and salmon rank highest as the most demanded commodities in the world valued at US$35.87 billion and a market share of 19.4 percent. Below them are shrimp which is valued at US$27.00 billion and a 14.6 share, tuna-mackerel-skipjack valued at US$15.92 billion with an 8.6 percent share, and squid-octopus-cuttlefish with a value of US$11.44 billion and a share of 6.2 percent.
However, Ishartini said that in addition to paying attention to market preferences, Indonesia will also focus on improving the quality of its available resources and introducing them to the market. This is to attract higher and broader market interest.
"So we adapt to their preferences because they are the buyers, but we also introduce our products through promotions," she said. For example, through global exhibitions and Indonesian restaurants abroad through existing diaspora networks.
