TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Kemlu) has successfully freed 12 Indonesian citizens (WNI) who were victims of human trafficking crimes (TPPO) in Myanmar. The Director of WNI Protection at Kemlu, Judha Nugraha, stated that the 12 WNI who were trapped in online scam companies had been safely evacuated from Myanmar to Thailand on Tuesday, October 15, 2024, at 16:00 local time.
"The Indonesian citizens will undergo immigration procedures in Thailand in accordance with applicable regulations," Judha said in his official statement on Wednesday, October 16, 2024.
Judha explained that these TPPO victims initially traveled to Thailand between March and July 2024 in search of promised employment. Upon arrival, the victims were held captive and forced to work as online scammers.
Furthermore, the victims also experienced physical violence. "They also faced communication difficulties as their cell phones were confiscated," Judha said. "However, some of them managed to convey their whereabouts after successfully communicating with the Indonesian Embassy in Yangon."
Judha mentioned that Kemlu received complaints from the victims last August. Subsequently, Kemlu, together with the Indonesian Embassy in Yangon, delivered diplomatic notes and coordinated with the relevant authorities in Myanmar. They also communicated with local networks in Myawaddy. To date, Judha stated that Kemlu has successfully rescued 65 Indonesian citizens from that area. "There are still no less than 69 Indonesian citizens currently being assisted by the Indonesian government to leave Myawaddy," he added.
Judha urges Indonesian citizens planning to work abroad to depart through official channels in accordance with the applicable procedures. "To avoid the risk of becoming victims of TPPO or forced labor," Judha concluded.
