Indonesia's 'Jumbo' Hits 4 Million Viewers, Here's What the Director Promised

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jumbo has officially become the highest-grossing Southeast Asian animated film of all time, drawing over 4 million viewers in just 17 days. This milestone surpasses the previous record held by Malaysia’s Mechamato Movie (2022).

“We’re incredibly grateful that Jumbo has made history as the best-selling animated film in Southeast Asia. More than just a number, this reflects the immense trust Indonesian audiences have in local creations,” said producer Anggia Kharisma.

Jumbo’s success even outpaces several major Hollywood animated titles in Indonesia, including Minions: The Rise of Gru (2022), which drew 2.5 million viewers, and Moana 2 (2024) with 3.1 million. 

Jumbo is predicted to surpass the viewership of Frozen II (2019), which is currently the best-selling animated film screened in Indonesia with more than 4.6 million viewers, according to the online film box office aggregator, Cinepoint.

The Director's Promise

Previously, director Ryan Adriandhy made a promise. He vowed to do a 'Stand-Up Comedy Special Show' if Jumbo managed to surpass 4 million viewers.

"About a year ago, even before Jumbo had a release date, I promised that if this film reaches 4 million viewers, I would create a 'Stand-Up Comedy Special Show.' And all of this has happened because of the incredible Indonesian audience," Ryan said.

Ryan was previously known as a comedian. He is also one of the five founders of Stand-Up Comedy Indonesia community. He won the first place in one of the inaugural stand-up comedy competitions, which became a pioneer and reference for comedians in the country.

After success in the domestic market, Jumbo is preparing to travel to more than 17 countries.

"From the beginning, I told more than 420 fellow creators involved, that if we want to create something that can become a new standard: it should be done wholeheartedly, with love, and carefully prepared. And all of you have proven that a work like this can go this far. Thank you for all the support and love from all of you," Ryan said.
