TEMPO.CO, JakartaIndonesia welcomes Brazil's announcement as the Chair of BRICS in 2025 regarding Indonesia's membership in the bloc. This milestone reflects Indonesia's growing active role in global affairs, as well as its commitment to strengthening multilateral cooperation to realize a more inclusive and equitable global order.

The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a press statement on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, explained that Indonesia views its membership in BRICS as a strategic step to enhance collaboration and cooperation with other developing countries, based on the principles of equality, mutual respect, and sustainable development.

As a growing and diverse economy, Indonesia is committed to actively contributing to the BRICS agenda, including promoting economic resilience, technological cooperation, sustainable development, and addressing global challenges such as climate change, food security, and public health. BRICS is an important platform for Indonesia to foster South-South cooperation, ensuring the voices and aspirations of Global South countries are heard and represented in global decision-making processes.

“We remain dedicated to working closely with all BRICS members, as well as with others, to build a just, peaceful, and prosperous world,” said the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also extends appreciation to Russia as the 2024 BRICS Chair for its support and leadership in facilitating Indonesia's entry into BRICS, as well as Brazil, which holds the presidency of BRICS this year.

The ministry said Indonesia’s formal inclusion as a full member of the bloc is the result of Indonesia's active engagement with BRICS over the past few years, including attending the BRICS Summit in Johannesburg in 2023 under the presidency of South Africa and the 2024 Kazan Summit under the presidency of Russia.

Indonesia's participation in BRICS is an extension of the constitutional mandate to play an active role in maintaining the global order. Indonesia will continue its commitment to bridge diverse interests in various multilateral forums. Indonesia, the ministry said, looks forward to participating constructively in various BRICS initiatives for the benefit of the global community.
