Indonesian Citizen in Japan Arrested for Attempted Robbery, Murder of Elderly

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Foreign Ministry confirmed on Friday, November 29, 2024, that an Indonesian citizen in Japan with the initials YAP, 24 years old, was arrested on charges of attempted robbery and murder of two elderly Japanese citizens.

The Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo received this information from the Kakegawa Police, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan. YAP was arrested on November 27, 2024. His actions resulted in the serious injury of two elderly people, aged 81 and 78, who are currently receiving medical treatment at the hospital.

YAP was a trainee at a construction materials company in Chihama, Kakegawa, and had been in Japan for two years. YAP committed the robbery for the purpose of online gambling.

The Kakegawa police are currently investigating the case. The Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo will provide consular assistance to ensure that the rights of the individuals are protected under local law.

Before COVID-19, the number of Indonesian citizens in Japan was 67,000, and it decreased to about 60,000 at the beginning of the pandemic. However, the number of Indonesian citizens reached 83,000 in June 2022, according to a report by the Japanese Immigration Agency.

Among these figures, the number of trainees or kenshusei has increased to 44,000 from the previous 34,000. Meanwhile, the number of workers with specific skills (specified skilled workers) has reached almost 10,000 individuals.

The Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo has called on various Indonesian communities in Japan to help each other in reaching out to other Indonesian citizens in different regions. The Embassy cooperates with Indonesian communities in various fields such as religion, regional groups, sports, arts, professional groups, and entrepreneurs. In terms of advisory and consultation services, the Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo has provided online platforms for the welfare and protection of Indonesian citizens.
