TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - On Thursday, November 21, 2024, the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague, Netherlands issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, former Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, and Hamas military commander Mohammed Deif.
The court accused the two of committing "crimes against humanity and war crimes" in the Palestinian territories at least from October 8, 2023, to May 20, 2024, the date when the ICC prosecutor filed the request for the arrest warrants.
The ICC judges perceived that there were reasonable grounds to believe that Netanyahu and Gallant were criminally responsible for the use of murder, persecution, and deliberate starvation as weapons of war against the civilian population of Gaza.
Here is a list of countries that openly support the ICC’s decision.
1. Palestine
Palestinian officials and residents have welcomed the ICC's decision as a significant step towards justice for the Palestinian people. Wasil Abu Yousef, a member of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) Executive Committee, hailed the decision as a "beginning of the end of genocide crimes in Gaza."
Hamas also praised the ICC's move, calling it a "historic step" towards correcting "historical injustices" against Palestinians. The group urged the international community to cooperate with the ICC and hold Israeli officials accountable for their actions.
2. Indonesia
Indonesia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed strong support for the ICC's decision, emphasizing its importance in upholding international law and protecting the rights of the Palestinian people. The ministry called for the implementation of the decision in accordance with international law and urged a just and peaceful two-state solution.
3. Iran
Iran's Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Esmail Baghaei Hamaneh hailed the ICC decision as an important step towards ending the impunity of the Israeli regime. He also criticized the U.S. for obstructing international efforts to hold Israel accountable for its actions in Gaza.
4. French NGOs
Eleven French non-governmental organizations, including Ligue des Droits de l'Homme (LDH) and the Association of Solidarity with Palestine France (AFPS), called on the French government to fully support the ICC's decision. They urged France to arrest Netanyahu and Gantz if they enter French territory.
Former French Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin emphasized France's obligation to uphold international law by implementing the ICC's decision. However, some French officials have expressed caution, citing legal complexities.
5. Turkiye
President of Turkiye Recep Tayyip Erdogan reiterated the importance of implementing the ICC's decision. He emphasized the need to restore trust in the international system and criticized countries that support Israel's actions in Gaza.
