Iranian Fighter Jet Crashes, Two Pilots Killed

An Iranian fighter jet tragically crashed in the southern region of the country on Wednesday, resulting in the deaths of both pilots, according to government media reports as cited by Al Arabiya.

Iranian state television identified the deceased pilots as Colonel Hamid Reza Ranjbar and Colonel Manouchehr Pirzadeh. Media reports indicated that the aircraft was involved in a routine test flight following a comprehensive overhaul when the fatal incident occurred.

The aircraft plummeted to the ground near the city of Firouzabad, approximately 770 kilometers south of the capital Tehran. The crash occurred in a mountainous region situated between Firouzabad and Qir, taking place around 2:45 p.m. local time.

The report did not explicitly specify the type of aircraft involved nor provide a definitive explanation for the cause of the accident. However, footage captured by the semi-official news agency Fars, which maintains close ties with the military, depicted a plume of white smoke billowing from the wreckage of the aircraft.

An emergency response team, comprising firefighters from both the Firouzabad and Qir districts, was promptly dispatched to the crash site to initiate rescue and recovery operations.

The bodies of the two pilots were recovered following the arrival of emergency services at the scene, according to official statements.

Following the recovery operation, the remains of the two pilots were transported to the provincial capital for further arrangements.

The aircraft, which belonged to the Iranian Ministry of Defense and Armed Forces Logistics, was undergoing routine maintenance and subsequent test flights when the tragic incident occurred.

Authorities have not yet released an official statement regarding the cause of the accident, and a thorough investigation is likely to be conducted.

The Iranian Air Force possesses a diverse fleet of aircraft, including a number of U.S.-made military aircraft acquired prior to the 1979 Islamic Revolution, such as the iconic American Tomcat F-14s. Additionally, the Iranian Air Force operates a fleet of Russian-made MiG and Sukhoi aircraft.

Western sanctions, imposed for several decades, have significantly hampered Iran's ability to acquire spare parts and maintain its aging fleet of aircraft.

The country has unfortunately experienced a series of similar aviation accidents involving its non-operational fleet. In 2022, a fighter jet tragically crashed in the heart of the Iranian desert, claiming the lives of both pilots on board.

Earlier that same year, another fighter jet met with a tragic fate, crashing into a football field within the city of Tabriz in the northwest, resulting in the deaths of both pilots and tragically claiming the life of a civilian on the ground.
