Israel Joins US-Brokered Ceasefire with Iran, White House Says

3 hours ago 12

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A White House official told CNN on Tuesday night that Israel has become part of a two-week ceasefire with Iran announced by US President Donald Trump.

The announcement came just an hour and a half before the deadline set by Trump for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz or face an increased military assault on civilian infrastructure.

Israel has also agreed to suspend its bombing campaign while negotiations continue, the official said.

Earlier, CNN reported that Israeli officials were disappointed with the temporary ceasefire agreement reached by the US with Iran, according to an Israeli source familiar with the matter.

Nevertheless, the source stated that Israel would abide by the ceasefire, following Trump's directive.

However, Israel did so reluctantly. "Israel still has more targets on its list and more objectives to achieve through military actions in Iran," the source said.

When asked by CNN in mid-March, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu refused to answer whether Israel would halt its attacks on Iran if Trump reached a ceasefire.

However, he acknowledged that Trump is a "leader" and that he is "his ally."

"In the end, President Trump makes his decisions and do I respect it? Yes, I respect him," Netanyahu told CNN during a press conference on March 18.
