TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The General Elections Commission (KPU) has stated that voter turnout in the Jakarta Regional Election was lower than in the 2024 Presidential Election. The KPU has not received and is still awaiting detailed reports on voter turnout data for the 2024 Jakarta election.

"Preliminary observations show that voter turnout is lower than the turnout in the last presidential and legislative elections," said the head of the Dissemination and Community Participation Department of the Jakarta KPU, Astri Megatari, at her office on Thursday, November 28, 2024.

According to Astri, the institution has made efforts to encourage Jakarta residents to come to the polling stations and exercise their right to vote. With the decline in voter turnout during the regional election, the Jakarta KPU said it would evaluate its dissemination program.

"Information on the regional election has been provided well in advance, starting from the early stages and dissemination. The results are lower, so we need to review it," she said.

The chairman of the Jakarta KPU, Wahyu Dinata, echoed the same sentiment. He said the turnout in the regional election tended to be lower than in the presidential election. He added that a similar situation also occurred in several other regions.

Wahyu said he would investigate the reasons for the decline in voter participation in this year's simultaneous regional election. "Whether it is caused by our programs that are not effective in society or whether there are indeed certain conditions," he said at the KPU office in Jakarta on Thursday, November 28, 2024.

Based on the Charta Politika survey, only 58 percent of voters in the final voter list participated in the Jakarta election. This means that 42 percent of voters did not exercise their right to vote in this regional election.

The voter participation rate has decreased compared to the 2017 regional election, in which 70 percent of voters participated. Meanwhile, the voter participation rate in the Jakarta election reached 69.57 percent, according to a survey by the Indonesian Survey Institute.
