Jakarta Regional Election May Go for Two Rounds; Researcher Says

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Rangga Eka Sakti, a researcher at Kompas Research and Development, said that the electoral competition among candidate pairs in the Jakarta regional head election is still tight. He believes that there is still a possibility for change, especially between candidate pair number 1 Ridwan Kamil-Suswono (RIDO) and candidate pair number 3 Pramono Anung-Rano Karno, as it is not too far from the margin of error.

"Any of the candidates still has a chance to win the Jakarta regional election," Rangga said when releasing the results of the Pilkada Jakarta electability survey via live broadcast on YouTube on Tuesday, November 5, 2024.

Based on the survey results, candidates number three Pramono and Rano, who are backed by the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) and the Hanura Party, are ahead of their two opponents with an electability rate of 38.3 percent.

Meanwhile, Ridwan Kamil-Suswono received 34.6 percent of the vote, trailing Pramono-Rano by 3.7 percent.

The pair of independent candidates, Dharma Pongrekun and Kun Wardana, came in last with an electability rate of 3.3 percent.

Potentials for a two-round election

With the possibility of electability dynamics and the 50 percent plus one system, Rangga said there was a potential for the Jakarta regional head election to take two rounds.

Rangga also mentioned the finding of 23.8 percent of Jakarta residents who have not yet decided their choice because they are still waiting to see what happens during the campaign period in the next few weeks. This is a large percentage, he said, almost a quarter of the respondents in the survey.

The Litbang Kompas Eligibility Survey was conducted between October 20 and 25 through face-to-face interviews with 800 respondents who were randomly selected using a multi-stage systematic sampling method.

The survey's confidence level was 95 percent with a margin of error (MoE) of approximately 3.46 percent. It was reported that the survey was fully funded by Kompas Daily or PT Kompas Nusantara.
