TEMPO.CO, Jakarta -The rainfall that blanketed Jakarta from Thursday morning through Friday morning, January 22-23, 2026, has been classified as extreme. Data from the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) confirmed that precipitation during this period reached 189.0 mm.
Heavy rain concentrated in Central Jakarta, specifically around the Presidential Palace. Other weather stations recording extreme rainfall, exceeding 150 mm within 24 hours, were located in Pulomas, Manggarai, Pompa Cideng, and the Pulogadung sluice gate.
Furthermore, several stations reported very heavy rain, ranging between 100 and 150 mm, from Thursday into Friday morning. These were distributed across Jakarta, parts of Greater Tangerang, and the regencies and cities of Bekasi. Meanwhile, other areas, including the northern coast of North Jakarta and much of Bogor, recorded heavy to moderate rainfall.
National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) climatologist Erma Yulihastin noted that Jakarta’s rain last Thursday reached 126 mm, categorized as very heavy. She observed that the weather system was persistent, with clear indications of a storm.
"Yesterday, heavy rain drenched Jakarta, reaching 126 mm and accompanied by gusts of 56 km/h occurring three times throughout the day: morning, noon, and night," she remarked.
For today, Saturday, January 24, 2026, BMKG predicts that rain will continue to affect residents of Jakarta and its surrounding satellite cities. However, in a shift from previous days, the entire region is currently only at risk of light rain, with no moderate-intensity downpours expected.
Additionally, BMKG’s early weather warning has downgraded Jakarta from "Beware" status regarding very heavy or extreme rain today. The agency now places the area in a "Caution" category for the potential of moderate to heavy rain.
