JAMES Arthur Lovell Jr or Jim Lovell, a legendary American astronaut widely known as the commander of the Apollo 13 mission, passed away on Thursday, August 7, 2025, at the age of 97.

Jim Lovell, who led one of the most famous space missions in history, died at his home in Lake Forest, Illinois, United States. The sad news was announced by NASA on August 8, 2025 in an official statement released to the public.

In the statement, NASA revealed, "Jim’s character and steadfast courage helped our nation reach the Moon and turned a potential tragedy into a success from which we learned an enormous amount. We mourn his passing even as we celebrate his achievements." Lovell was known not only as a very courageous figure in facing great challenges, but also as a significant contributor to the advancement of space missions that changed history.

Profile of James Lovell

Jim Lovell was born on March 25, 1928 in Cleveland, Ohio, and from an early age, he showed great interest in the aviation and space exploration. Before joining NASA, Lovell had a distinguished career as a test pilot in the United States Navy.

In 1962, he was selected as one of the astronauts in NASA's selection, which led him to participate in various important space missions. Throughout his career, Jim Lovell was involved in four major space missions, namely Gemini 7, Gemini 12, Apollo 8, and the most famous one, Apollo 13.

In 1968, Lovell, along with Frank Borman and William Anders, became part of the Apollo 8 crew that made history by becoming the first people to leave Earth's orbit and orbit the moon. The mission paved the way for greater space achievements, including manned lunar landing missions.

However, the Apollo 13 mission launched in April 1970 became the focus of the world after an oxygen tank explosion threatened the safety of the entire crew. Lovell, together with his colleagues, Fred Haise and Jack Swigert, had to overcome extremely difficult emergency conditions.

With instructions from the ground team, they successfully used the lunar landing module as a "lifeboat," enabling them to return to Earth safely. Although they failed to land on the moon, the mission's success was considered a major achievement in terms of rescue and crisis management.

For his bravery, Lovell was awarded the Congressional Space Medal of Honor. This medal was given as a token of appreciation for Lovell's leadership and composure in facing a major crisis.

NASA also praised Jim Lovell's ability to maintain composure under pressure, which enabled the entire crew to return to Earth safely. "His courage and composure under pressure helped us bring the crew back safely," said Sean Duffy, NASA's acting administrator, in an official statement about Jim Lovell's passing.

In addition to his success in the Apollo 13 mission, Lovell was known for his cheerful and humorous personality. He was often called "Smilin' Jim" by fellow astronauts, thanks to his positive and entertaining demeanor in high-pressure situations.

Aside from his accomplishments in the space industry, Lovell also had a successful career in the business world after retiring from NASA in 1973. He then served as the CEO of Bay-Houston Towing Company and also held executive positions in several large companies such as Fisk Telephone Systems and Centel Corporation.

In his retirement, Jim Lovell was involved in various social activities and received various awards, including the Distinguished Eagle Scout Award and the Silver Buffalo Award from the Boy Scouts of America.
