TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - U.S. President Joe Biden expressed his support for the free nutritious meal program initiated by President Prabowo Subianto during the meeting at the White House, Washington DC, United States, on Tuesday, November 12, 2024, local time.
"President Biden also expressed support for Indonesia’s national program to provide nutritious and healthy meals for school children and expecting mothers," according to an official release from the White House on Tuesday.
The United States and Indonesia are also committed to furthering health cooperation to advance clinical research, public health goals, and health systems, the White House stated.
"To address emerging and chronic health conditions, as well as infectious diseases, including tuberculosis."
In addition, Biden and Prabowo also welcomed a future signing of an elevated Memorandum of Understanding on health between Indonesia and the United States. This effort underscores both nation’s unwavering commitment to collaborate to realize Indonesia’s health transformation goals.
Previously, the Chinese government announced its support for Prabowo’s free nutritious meal program through funding. Prabowo met Chinese President Xi Jinping last week in Beijing.
The Chinese government supports the program by agreeing on the funding of the 'Food Supplementation and School Feeding Programme in Indonesia'.
The agreement was read during the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Indonesian government and the Chinese government, witnessed by President Prabowo Subianto and President Xi Jinping.
Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto said the Chinese government had already implemented this program for their people. "Yes, they (the Chinese government) will support it because they have already run a free nutritious meal program here," Airlangga said in Beijing on Sunday, November 10, 2024, as quoted from a written statement.
The Free Nutritious Meal program will commence on January 2, 2025. Expert Staff of the National Nutrition Agency, Ikeu Tanziha, said the program will target around 15-20 million children in its early stage, spread across 82 locations in the country.
