TEMPO.CO, Yogyakarta - Former President Joko Widodo or Jokowi paid a private visit to Governor of Yogyakarta, Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono X, on Wednesday, January 15, 2025. The unannounced visit took place at the Sultan's private residence within the Kilen Palace complex, rather than at the Governor's Office in Kepatihan.
Tempo observed that the visit which lasted approximately one hour from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. local time was conducted with heightened security. Dozens of police and military personnel were deployed to safeguard the area.
Jokowi arrived and departed from the Palace grounds in a black Toyota Alphard, declining to answer questions from the waiting media. Although he briefly lowered his car window, he only smiled and offered no comment.
Throughout the meeting, the gates of the Kilen Palace remained largely closed, with only a limited number of vehicles permitted entry and exit. Joint security forces were also seen within the Kilen area.
“Based on the information we have received, this was only a personal agenda,” said Senior Commissioner Aditya Surya Dharma, Chief of the Yogyakarta City Police, who was also stationed at the Kilen Palace.
Aditya did not disclose the specific topics discussed during the meeting.
Ditya Nanaryo Aji, Public Relations Coordinator at the Public Relations and Protocol Bureau of Yogyakarta Secretary General, said that Jokowi's visit was not an official government function. “Since it was a personal meeting, he (Jokowi) met Ngarso Dalem (the Sultan) at the Kilen Palace, rather than at the Governor's Office,” he explained.
Ditya further emphasized that the Yogyakarta government was not informed about the meeting's agenda since it was a personal visit. “We have no information regarding the topics discussed,” he concluded.
Sultan Hamengku Buwono X remained brief when questioned about his meeting with Jokowi. “I cannot comment on this as it was a private visit,” he said upon arriving at the Governor's Office shortly after the meeting.
The Sultan attributed the visit to a desire to reconnect after a period of time. “It was merely a casual visit, so I have no further comment,” he said, dismissing any speculation that the meeting involved discussions on current political issues.
