TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The recently viral 'Koin Jagat' (roughly translated as Universe Coins) phenomenon has many players busy digging the ground in various locations with the belief that there are coins hidden underneath, although some incidents have resulted in damage to public facilities. This game involves many children and causes panic and damage due to indiscriminate digging.
The Minister of Women's Empowerment and Child Protection (PPPA) Arifah Fauzi also asked the public, especially children, to be smart and rational in responding to the Koin Jagat search phenomenon in several areas.
"This is actually a game from parties whose identities we don't know," said Arifah at the Presidential Palace complex in Jakarta, Tuesday, January 14, 2025.
She explained that this phenomenon is a form of game from parties whose identities are unknown who deliberately spread information whose truth is unclear. "Maybe our society is easily trusting, this actually requires awareness, understanding, not being easily tempted by information whose truth we don't know yet," explained Arifah.
Arifah emphasized the need to trace information about the presence of the Koin Jagat application whose origins are unclear and the importance of educating the public. "This just happened and we will look for the cause, where the source is, how it can be so massive," said Arifah.
She also emphasized the importance of the role of families and schools in providing education to children so that they are not influenced by news that has not been proven true. "There needs to be awareness and to make the public aware that if they do something, they are rational. So, don't get carried away by issues that we don't know the truth of," said the Minister of PPPA.
Many disadvantages
Previously, infrastructure and urban planning observer Yayat Supriatna also thought that the Koin Jagat game was unproductive and detrimental. According to him, although the coins are said to be exchangeable for cash prizes, he considered the game to have many disadvantages.
"If the disadvantages, it is wasting time or wasting time for nothing. Not productive, spending time just to seek luck," said Yayat, Tuesday, January 14, 2025.
He also highlighted the location of the game activities. If using public facilities, this can give rise to spatial conflicts between those who want to exercise or recreate with those who bet to get prizes from the Koin Jagat game. This game can even disrupt life safety if it is played in a densely trafficked area that can trigger an accident.
"Another disturbing factor if it is played in a densely visited or densely trafficked area, this can be dangerous. If players are looking for it, they forget about the dangers of traffic, there are drainage holes, so it can potentially cause an accident," he said.
He also explained that coins that are deliberately spread in a hidden way can trigger people's behavior to dismantle infrastructure, damage plants, or public facilities. "If an accident or damage to public facilities occurs, are they (the game organizers) also responsible? I am worried that this activity will make the behavior of teenagers who have no income or no pocket money even more unproductive. Chasing instant things but wasting time and being unproductive," said Yayat.
