TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) highlights the case of alleged intimidation against the members of the punk band Sukatani which led to the withdrawal of their song titled Bayar Bayar Bayar from music streaming platforms. Uli Parulian Sihombing, the Commissioner of Monitoring and Investigation at Komnas HAM, stated that all parties must respect the right to freedom of expression.

"All parties must respect the right to freedom of opinion and expression following the Constitution and the laws," he said when contacted by Tempo on Tuesday, February 25, 2025.

Regarding the alleged intimidation of Sukatani band members, Komnas HAM stated they would request a statement from the Central Java Regional Police and the National Police Headquarters (Mabes Polri) regarding the incident. In addition, he also mentioned that they will delve into the dismissal of Sukatani's vocalist, Novi Citra Indrayati, from SDIT Mutiara Hati Banjarnegara as a teacher.

Previously, the Professional and Security Division (Propam) of the Indonesian National Police (Polri) was investigating six personnel from the Central Java Regional Police's Directorate of Special Criminal Investigation (Ditreskrimsus) regarding the alleged intimidation of Sukatani on February 22, 2025.

The Central Java Police Public Relations Division Chief, Commissioner Artanto, emphasized that the investigation of the six personnel is still ongoing and has not resulted in a conclusion.

He also stated that claims regarding "the entire actions of the personnel in this case following procedures and professionally" still need further clarification based on the ongoing examination results.

The Minister of Human Rights, Natalius Pigai, stated that law enforcement officers must make corrections and improvements by prioritizing human rights. "President Prabowo has emphasized the importance of substantial corrections during the TNI/Polri leadership meeting on January 30, 2025. The president's statement must be heeded by the police institution," said Natalius Pigai in a written statement received on Monday, February 24.

He stated that the public has a genuine right to express art, including music. However, this does not apply to art containing pornography. Exceptions also include works of art containing accusations that could damage the honor and dignity of individuals and national integrity. "I have no problem with any form of art as long as it is not anonymous and accusatory," he said.
