TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Every November 29, the world commemorates the International Day of Solidarity with the People of Palestine, first designated by the UN in 1977. This day is designed to highlight global support for Palestinian rights, including the right to self-determination, independence, and a fair resolution to the issue of Palestinian refugees.
This year, amidst the ongoing Israel's war in Gaza, nine countries, namely Armenia, Slovenia, Ireland, Norway, Spain, Bahamas, Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica, and Barbados, officially recognized the State of Palestine. This step proves the increasing international support for the Palestinian people's struggle. The recognition adds to the number of countries that have supported Palestinian rights to self-determination and the establishment of an independent state.
Currently, the State of Palestine has received official recognition from at least 146 United Nations (UN) member states and the Holy See, the government of the Vatican City and an observer in the UN. This recognition comes not just from a specific region, but is widespread worldwide, covering various regions such as Asia, Africa, Latin America, the Middle East, and Eastern Europe.
Several major countries also offer important support for Palestine, including Indonesia, as one of the main supporters of Palestinian independence in Southeast Asia, and other influential countries such as China, India, and Russia.
Moreover, the majority of countries in the Middle East region, which geographically and historically have close ties with Palestine, have also recognized it. In Africa, the support for Palestine is extensive, reflecting the solidarity of developing countries in the struggle against colonialism and oppression.
