TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A monitoring team was sent to observe the implementation of the ceasefire between Cambodia and Thailand on Wednesday, according to Cambodia's Deputy Secretary of State and Ministry of Defense spokesperson, Lieutenant General Maly Socheata.
Socheata, in a press conference on Wednesday, as reported by Antara, said that Malaysia, as the current ASEAN chair, had dispatched a high-level delegation led by General Datuk Haji Mohd Nizam Bin Haji Jaffar, the Chief of the Malaysian Armed Forces, to Cambodia on Tuesday.
According to the spokesperson, Nizam confirmed that two monitoring teams would be assigned. One team would be led by the Malaysian military attache in Cambodia, and the other by the Malaysian military attache in Thailand.
Socheata stated that the ceasefire had been effectively and peacefully implemented thus far.
He mentioned that military commanders from the two countries had met on Tuesday, demonstrating a stance of mutual respect and cooperation, and reaffirming their commitment to the agreements reached in regional meetings.
Based on a statement issued by the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the same Wednesday, the Thai military was attacked with small arms fire and grenades launched by Cambodian forces on Tuesday evening local time. Thailand denounced Cambodia for violating the ceasefire agreement for the second time.
Thailand reiterated its full commitment to the ceasefire and peaceful resolution of the current situation. It strongly urged Cambodia to immediately cease all violations and fully comply with the ceasefire agreement.
As reported by ABC News, Thailand and Cambodia reasserted the ceasefire despite fragility, after days of fighting along their border, when China intervened to negotiate with both countries.
On Wednesday, there were signs of calmness along the border, with more than 260,000 people displaced by the fighting returning to their homes.
Cambodia and Thailand had previously clashed along an 800-kilometer border. The fighting began on Thursday after a landmine explosion along the border injured five Thai soldiers. The clashes resulted in the deaths of at least 43 people from both sides, including civilians.
Tensions escalated since May when a Cambodian soldier was killed in a confrontation that created a diplomatic rift and shook domestic politics in Thailand.
