TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs (Komdigi) said the global digital platform Meta has now raised the minimum age limit for users to 16 years old. The sweeping changes apply to any social media platforms under the tech firm created by Mark Zuckerberg, including Facebook, Instagram, and Threads.
According to the Komdigi Minister Meutya Hafid, the change was officially documented in Meta's community guidelines on Thursday, April 9, 2026. "We appreciate Meta, which oversees Instagram, Facebook, and Threads, for demonstrating compliance in aligning their products, features, and services with Indonesian laws," Meutya said in a written statement on Friday.
The change comes after Komdigi summoned Meta's representatives in Indonesia on April 7, 2026, over alleged violations of user protection obligations in accordance with Government Regulation No. 17 of 2025 regarding Electronic System Governance for Child Protection (PP Tunas).
Under the new regulations, all high-risk digital platforms are required to set the minimum user age to over 16 years, higher than the previous average standard of 13 years.
Until the regulation came into effect on March 28, 2026, Meta had not fulfilled its obligation to restrict children's access to the platform.
Aside from Meta, on the same day, Komdigi inspected Google, the parent company of YouTube. However, unlike Meta, Meutya stated that as of today, Google has not shown commitment to comply with the applicable rules. "We have issued an administrative sanction in the form of a first warning to Google," Meutya said.
The Golkar Party politician emphasized that all platforms must receive equal treatment under the law. "The government does not tolerate non-compliance and we will impose administrative sanctions and other strict measures," she said.
