TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Foreign Minister Sugiono has clarified that Indonesia's membership in BRICS does not contradict its pursuit of OECD membership. Both organizations, he explained, adhere to different sets of rules and regulations.

“There is no conflict between the OECD and BRICS, as confirmed by the OECD itself. Each continues to respect Indonesia's domestic laws and regulations,” Sugiono said during a working meeting with the House of Representatives (DPR) Commission I at the parliament complex in Senayan, Central Jakarta, on Monday, December 2, 2024.

Since assuming the role of Foreign Minister, Sugiono has advocated for Indonesia's membership in BRICS. He conveyed this desire during the BRICS High-Level Conference in Russia last October, emphasizing Indonesia's role as a bridge between developed and developing countries.

Prior to pursuing BRICS membership, Indonesia initiated the process of joining the OECD. The recent visit of the OECD Secretary-General to meet with President Prabowo Subianto further strengthened Indonesia's commitment to the organization.

Deputy Foreign Minister Arrmanatha Nasir highlighted Indonesia's strategic decision to join both organizations as a means to contribute to global peace and stability. In an increasingly divided world, marked by geopolitical tensions and economic challenges, Indonesia seeks to play a constructive role in shaping the global order.

“Our commitment to the OECD and BRICS reflects our efforts to create a more conducive global environment,” Arrmanatha said during the 12th US-Indonesia Investment Summit on Tuesday, November 26, 2024, as reported by Antara.

Indonesia's OECD accession process began with the approval of the roadmap by the OECD Council in March 2024, while the country expressed its interest in joining BRICS at the BRICS Plus Summit on October 24, 2024.

According to Arrmanatha, economic turmoil caused by economic sanctions, excessively high tariffs, disruptions in the global supply chain, and climate change, are obstacles to collectively achieving strong global growth. Through OECD, BRICS, and other organizations, he stated that Indonesia will continue to advocate for multilateral reforms by strengthening the architecture of global peace and security, financial architecture and infrastructure, as well as trade architecture.
