TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Monkey Forest tourist attraction in Gianyar Regency, Bali, was temporarily closed after the falling tree incident on Tuesday, December 10, 2024. The closure of Monkey Forest is carried out until the tourist attraction is ready to be visited again.

Head of the Bali Tourism Office (Dispar) Tjok Bagus Pemayun said that until now, the area affected by the fallen tree is still limited by a police line.

"We have communicated the incident with the Head of the Gianyar Tourism Office further, for the time being the tourist attraction is closed," he said, in Denpasar, Wednesday.

The Bali Tourism Office has not been able to confirm when this natural tourist attraction will be opened. He admitted that he still wants to see the development of the situation including during the 2024 Christmas and 2025 New Year moments.

"If it can be finished quickly, if it's okay maybe it can be opened again, currently the management agency has mapped (the trees), especially since previously the dry season was long, now it's added to the transitional season, rain," he said.

Disaster Mitigation

Tjok Pemayun said that the management of the tourist attraction mapped the conditions as a form of disaster mitigation. His party has directed this since before the case of the fallen tree in Monkey Forest because Bali will receive a surge of tourists during the 2024 Christmas and 2025 New Year holidays.

In addition, his direction is that all tourist attractions are asked to maintain cleanliness, so that tourists feel comfortable and reduce the potential for unwanted incidents.

"Tourism managers or businesses should just tell tourists that this is the condition based on BMKG, the weather is like this, for example if it rains, prepare an umbrella or raincoat," he said again.

Two Foreign National Victims

In the case of the fallen tree in Monkey Forest, two foreign tourist victims were recorded as having died, and one person is currently being treated.

"The victims have been treated at the clinic and all are covered by the management agency, insurance is also there, the important thing is that it is covered by insurance, the treatment is also covered by the management agency," said Tjok Pemayun.

Previously, the Bali Regional Police (Polda) revealed the chronology of the two foreign nationals, namely Funny Justine Christine (32) from France and Kim Hyoeun (42) from South Korea who died in the incident.

The tragic incident occurred at around 12:25 WITA. According to witness I Nyoman Lilir, General Manager of the Monkey Forest Tourist Attraction, when carrying out a situation control, there was suddenly a strong wind accompanied by rain in the Ubud Monkey Forest tourist attraction area. Not long after, a sound like a tree had fallen was heard. After checking, it turned out that the banyan tree, pule tree, and kresek tree growing next to the Prajapati temple in the Monkey Forest Tourist Area had fallen towards the east.

At that time, many tourists visited and saw this. In the CCTV footage, tourists were seen trying to escape, but because the banyan tree that fell was very large, several foreign nationals were also hit by tree branches.

The Bali Regional Disaster Management Agency or BPDB noted that on that day there were 54 trees fallen throughout Bali, including in Monkey Forest. In addition to fallen trees, heavy rain accompanied by strong winds that day also caused landslides in Tabanan Regency.
