TEMPO.CO, Bandung - The Geological Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) has detected the eruption of Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki in East Flores, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), on Tuesday evening, November 12, 2024. The eruption at 7:18 PM local time was recorded to produce thunderous sounds heard up to 14 kilometers.
The Head of the Geological Agency, Muhammad Wafid, said that the eruption sound was heard again at 10:50 PM local time, but its range had reached Maumere. "The distance from the mountain to Maumere is about 55 kilometers," he said in a written statement shortly after the eruption.
According to Wafid, the eruption of Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki yesterday lasted until 11:35 PM local time. The Geological Agency reported that the eruption column height was not observed. However, the team was able to monitor the glowing lava flow from the eruption center. Data from the Geological Agency's drone recorded that the temperature of the lava flow reached 600 degrees Celsius.
The Geological Agency has maintained the Alert status for Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki since November 3, 2024. This status followed a major eruption on November 3, 2024, which resulted in the death of 10 people.
The danger zone radius was set at 7 kilometers from the mountain peak. Meanwhile, the radius of the at-risk area in the southwest and northwest sectors, initially set at 8 kilometers, has been expanded to 9 kilometers.
The Geological Agency also advised the community to be alert to the potential of rain-induced volcanic mudflows in rivers originating from the peak of Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki, especially during heavy rainfall. "The public must remain calm and follow the instructions of local governments, as well as not believe in unclear rumors," said Wafid.
