TEMPO.CO, JakartaMount Semeru continues to erupt overnight into Wednesday morning, January 15, at around 7:06 a.m. local time, as reported by the Semeru Volcano Observation Post (PGA).

An observation post located on Mount Sawur, Sumber Wuluh Village, Candipuro District, Lumajang, recorded an earthquake with a maximum amplitude of 22 mm and a duration of 110 seconds. Visually, the eruption column is visible up to approximately 900 meters above the Semeru peak.

“The ash column was whitish gray in color and thick, blowing southeast and south,” said PGA Semeru Officer Sigit Rian Alfian in his report on Wednesday morning.

In the past 24 hours, seismic observations showed 47 eruption earthquakes with an amplitude of 10–22 mm and earthquake durations of 60–200 seconds. One cluster of avalanche earthquakes was detected with an amplitude of 6 mm and an earthquake duration of 71 seconds.

The seismograph also detects seven gust earthquakes at Mount Semeru, with an amplitude of 2-8 mm for 13-83 seconds and two harmonic earthquakes with an amplitude of 5-8 mm and a duration of 120-131 seconds. Additionally, the sismograph detects three deep volcanic earthquakes and nine distant tectonic earthquakes.

Mount Semeru, the highest volcano on Java Island, remains at volcanic alert level II. At this level, the Center for Volcanology Mitigation and Geological Disaster (PVMBG) issued a number of recommendations, including not carrying out any activities in the southeast sector along Besuk Kobokan as far as 8 kilometers from the mountain peak.

Outside this distance, the public is asked not to carry out activities within a distance of 500 meters from the river bank (river border) along Besuk Kobokan because it has the potential to be hit by the expansion of hot clouds and lava flows up to a distance of 13 km from the peak.

PVMBG also asked the public not to carry out activities within a radius of 3 km from the crater/peak of Mount Semeru because it is prone to the danger of ejected rocks (incandescent).

The public is also asked to be aware of the potential for avalanches of hot clouds and lava along rivers or valleys that originate at the peak of Mount Semeru, especially along Besuk Kobokan, Besuk Bang, Besuk Kembar, and Besuk Sat, as well as the potential for lava in small rivers that are tributaries of Besuk Kobokan.
