TEMPO.CO, Lumajang - Mount Semeru reportedly erupted accompanied by a 2-kilometer hot cloud ejection heading towards Besuk Kobokan, Wednesday, December 25, 2024. The height of the ash column was observed up to 1,000 meters above the peak.

The Semeru Volcano Observation Post (PGA) on Mount Sawur, Sumber Wuluh Village, Candipuro District, Lumajang Regency, stated that the ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity leaning towards the southwest. The eruption that occurred at around 04:31 WIB (Western Indonesian Time) was recorded on a seismogram with a maximum amplitude of 22 mm and a duration of approximately 4 minutes 25 seconds.

Based on seismic observations in the last 24 hours until early Wednesday morning, there were 55 eruptions recorded with an amplitude of 11-22 mm, and an earthquake duration of 60-157 seconds. The Semeru PGA Post also recorded two avalanche earthquakes with an amplitude of 7-8 mm and an earthquake duration of 59-72 seconds.

Then, 14 gust earthquakes were recorded with an amplitude of 3-8 mm, and an earthquake duration of 37-73 seconds. Also recorded was one harmonic with an amplitude of 4 mm, and an earthquake duration of 71 seconds and two distant tectonic earthquakes with an amplitude of 5-28 mm, S-P 11-18 seconds and an earthquake duration of 50-56 seconds.

Semeru PGA Post Officer, Sigit Rian Alfian, reported that the activity level of Mount Semeru was still at Level II (Alert). At this Level II activity level, the Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation (PVMBG) issued several recommendations, including not carrying out any activities in the southeast sector along Besuk Kobokan as far as 8 kilometers from the peak (center of the eruption).

Outside of this distance, the community should not carry out activities within 500 meters of the river bank (river boundary) along Besuk Kobokan because it has the potential to be hit by the expansion of hot clouds and lava flows up to a distance of 13 kilometers from the peak.

PVMBG also asks not to carry out activities within a radius of 3 kilometers from the crater/peak of Mount Semeru because it is prone to the danger of ejected rocks (incandescent). The community is also asked to be aware of the potential for hot clouds falling, lava avalanches, and lava along the river/valley that originates at the peak of Mount Semeru, especially along Besuk Kobokan, Besuk Bang, Besuk Kembar, and Besuk Sat as well as the potential for lava in small rivers that are tributaries of Besuk Kobokan.
