TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The volcanic eruption of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara has disrupted air travel to and from Bali, forcing several airlines to cancel flights due to safety concerns.
Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki, located approximately 500 kilometers east of Bali, erupted on Sunday, spewing a massive ash cloud that has drifted westward. The volcanic ash poses a significant threat to aircraft engines, leading to widespread flight cancellations.
Three Australian airlines have canceled flights to and from the holiday destination following the volcano eruption. The groundings affected Jetstar, Qantas, and Virgin Australia flights on Tuesday and Wednesday, leaving passengers stranded, according to Guardian.
Two Qantas return flights have been delayed so far, one flight on Tuesday and one on Wednesday, scheduled to go from Australia to Denpasar.
Ten Virgin flights in and out of Indonesia on Wednesday have been canceled. “The safety of our guests and crew is our highest priority. Adverse weather due to the volcano in Indonesia has resulted in Virgin Australia canceling all flights in and out of Denpasar today (13 November). We regret the inconvenience this has caused our passengers, and our team is working hard to ensure all passengers booked on our services get to their destination safely and as soon as possible,” a Virgin spokesperson said.
“Due to volcanic ash caused by Mount Lewotobi in Indonesia, it is currently not safe to operate to and from Bali,” Jetstar said on Wednesday, citing from Guardian.
All Jetstar flights to and from Denpasar have been canceled until 2 p.m. local time. The airline plans to operate additional flights later in the day, subject to weather conditions.
The Indonesian Bureau of Meteorology has warned that volcanic ash is expected to continue affecting Bali and parts of northern Australia throughout the day. Travelers have been advised to check with their respective airlines for the latest updates.
