The New York Yankees might need help in the bullpen, but they've added another hitter to their lineup before Wednesday's trade deadline.
They've traded for outfielder Austin Slater at the Chicago White Sox, who will receive minor league pitcher Gage Ziehl in return.
Slater is the third addition to Aaron Boone's team in recent days - Ryan McMahon arrived from the Colorado Rockies as a much-needed third baseman, while infielder Amed Rosario was an addition from Washington Nationals.
The 32-year-old Slater hit .236 with five home runs and 11 RBIs in 51 games with the White Sox this season. He can play all three outfield positions.
Slater spent the first seven-plus seasons of his career with San Francisco before being traded to Cincinnati last summer. New York will be Slater's fifth team in just over a year.
A disastrous couple of months has seen the Yankees slide into second place in the American League East.

They beat the Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday night but are four games behind Toronto Blue Jays, who lead the standings.
Slater's arrival adds some crucial depth for the Yankees at a time where their star man Aaron Judge is on the injured list.
The slugger had an elbow issue that flared up last week against the Toronto Blue Jays and was aggravated in the home series against the Philadelphia Phillies.
He went for scans on Saturday with the Yankees initially refusing to rule out UCL damage. But a scan showed he had a flexor strain and a present, is on the 10-day injured list.
The deadline is 6pm eastern time Thursday and before then, the Yankees are expected to add at least one pitcher to the roster.
The Yankees will assume $564,516 of Slater's remaining $1.75 million salary, which also will increase their luxury tax by about $621,000.
Slater's new team faces the Rays in the third of a four-game series Wednesday night in the Bronx.
