TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The action of Hana-Rawhiti Maipi-Clarke, a parliament member from Te Pati Maori in New Zealand, leading the Haka dance in the New Zealand parliament has caught public attention. Maipi-Clarke, who comes from the Maori tribe, danced the Haka as a form of protest against a controversial bill during a session held on Thursday, November 14, 2024.
The bill proposed by the Libertarian Act Party contains changes to the interpretation of the agreements between the Maori tribe and the British Government in New Zealand. The controversial rules are considered to potentially threaten the rights of the Maori tribe in New Zealand as they eliminate important principles outlined in the Waitangi agreement - an agreement signed 184 years ago between over 500 Maori tribal chiefs and the British.
Amidst the dance and singing movement, Maipi-Clarke also tore a copy of the bill. This bill has faced heavy criticism from the general public. Thousands of people have marched in protests for nine days. These demonstrators are expected to arrive at the parliament next week as a form of solidarity.
Haka is a traditional dance similar to a war dance performed by the ancient Maori tribe. This dance is performed when various groups gather in a safe and peaceful condition as if on a battlefield.
The Maori tribe is the first tribe to inhabit New Zealand. According to Britannica, the Haka dance involves the entire body in rhythmic and energetic movements, such as swaying, chest and thigh slapping, stomping, and other movements.
These various movements are accompanied by chanting and a fierce facial expression with an intimidating meaning. There are also bulging eyes and protruding tongues, symbolizing preparation on the battlefield performed by male warriors.
The Haka dance emerged from the legends of the Maori tribe when the sun god Tama-nui-te-ra and one of his wives, Hine-raumati, and their son Tane-rore, wanted to embody the essence of summer.
The Maori tribe considers the air-quivering movements on summer days as a dance sign for the sun god. These movements underlie the emergence of various Haka dances.
In the past, the Haka dance was performed as a ritual meeting between two parties, and to welcome new tribal members. However, over time, this dance began to be performed to welcome birthdays, weddings, funerals, and other celebration events. Since 1972, the Haka dance performance has become a distinctive feature of the highly popular Te Matatini performing arts festival held biennially in New Zealand.
