TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Palestinian football player Zuhair Al-Hajj Ahmad was killed in an Israeli airstrike in the Al-Zaytoun area, east of Gaza City, on Tuesday, July 15, 2025.
This sad news was confirmed by the Palestinian Football Association (PFA) through its official social media account. In the statement, the PFA expressed deep condolences to the victim's family and the national football community.
Zuhair was mentioned as one of the players who had played for the local club and was a part of the larger Palestinian football family. He was known as a former player of the Gaza Sports Club and was a respected figure in the Palestinian football community. Zuhair's death added to the grief in the Palestinian sports world, which continues to be affected by the ongoing conflict in the region.
Field reports from Gaza indicated that the attack took place around the Salahuddin Mosque in the Al-Zaytoun area. Apart from Zuhair, several other civilians were injured, including the correspondent for Al Mayadeen news channel, Akram Daloul.
Zuhair Al-Hajj Ahmad was widely known among local football enthusiasts. His death added to the growing list of sports figures who have fallen since the start of the Israeli military escalation in the Gaza Strip.
According to data from the Palestinian Football Association (PFA), from 2023 to mid-2025, the number of Palestinian football players killed in Israeli military attacks has reached more than 200. In June 2025, it was reported that two young Palestinian players, Mustafa Met and Abdullah Mazen Hawila, were killed while queuing for humanitarian aid in Gaza due to Israeli shootings.
